Raku pottery firing is an exciting and unpredictable ceramic technique that brings a touch of magic to the pottery process.
Originating in Japan, Raku has become a beloved method for potters worldwide who appreciate its unique results and the connecting to the four elements.
The Process
Raku firing involves removing pottery from the kiln while it’s still glowing hot and placing it into a container filled with combustible organic materials like sawdust, leaves, newpaper.
The intense heat ignites the materials, creating a reduction atmosphere that produces stunning and often unpredictable effects on the glaze.
The pottery is then quickly cooled, by putting it in a bucket of water.
