During my recent trip to Mexico, I had the incredible fortune to join a group of talented and beautiful ladies, immersing myself in their unique approach to raku firing. Although raku firing is rooted in traditional Japanese pottery, it has evolved through the personal touches of artists worldwide. This journey not only broadened my understanding of raku but also deepened my appreciation for the diverse cultural practices that shape this art form.
One of the most fascinating techniques I encountered was the Mexican smoke fire. The process was mesmerizing; witnessing the transformation of the clay as it reacted to the smoke and flames was like watching a dance between earth and fire. This technique, while distinct from traditional Japanese raku, shared the same core principles of spontaneity and natural beauty.
I also had the opportunity to learn about the minerals used to create the stunning black clay that is characteristic of Mexican pottery.
