This week, I tried weaving with raffia palm, which reminded me of my Mauritian heritage. It brought back many memories, as raffia is a material that is used to make baskets and house brooms from the raffia fiber. It was used extensively by my ancestors and is still used now. Weaving with raffia connects me to my roots and the land. It is a wonderful way to honour my heritage and keep the tradition alive. I also experimented with corn husks that I grew last year. Weaving allows me to relax and take a break from the January blues. It is a calming and mindful activity. Raffia palm weaving is a traditional craft from central Africa and Madagascar. It uses long, flexible fibres from the raffia palm to make beautiful items like baskets and mats.
